Mandatory Motorcycle Insurance in Washington

It’s Official.. Washington Motorcycle Insurance Required

The Washington State Legislature passed a new law requiring all motorcycle drivers carry proof of liability insurance.  Motorcycles are no longer exempt from the mandatory auto insurance law.  This change takes effect July 28, 2019.

Exceptions to the law

Motorcycles licensed for road use will be required to carry liability insurance. The only exceptions are motor scooters, mopeds, specially licensed horseless carriage vehicles and police or government owned vehicles.  For more information and descriptions of the exempt vehicle types check out the insurance commissioners website HERE.

What to do next

Contact your insurance agent immediately.  In most cases a new insurance policy will be required for your motorcycle.  Give your agent plenty of time to find the right fit for your needs before the new law takes effect.

Tips to get the right coverage for you

  • Let your agent know about any motorcycle safety courses or certifications you hold.
  • Make sure your motorcycle liability limits match your auto liability limits
  • Have your motorcycle policy added to your umbrella liability policy.  (check out more information on personal umbrella liability HERE)
